Beautiful BC Hat Knitting Pattern PDF

I was inspired by the beautiful forests of my province, British Columbia (BC), Canada.

“The BC forests cover an area of about 60 million hectares (149 million acres) - the size of France and Germany combined.” Approximately 41% of the forests are more than 140 years old.

Two sizes and two charts are provided for your convenience, one with dark trees on a light background and one with light trees on a dark background.

 

Approximate Finished Measurements 

Size A: 19.5”(49.5cm) unstretched circumference

Size B: 21”(53.5cm) unstretched circumference; 8.75”(22cm) height with brim folded.

Measurements taken after blocking. 

 

Gauge

29 sts and 32 rnds = 4” (10cm) in circular colorwork on larger needles (blocked)

 

Suggested Needle Size

US 2/2.75mm and US 4/3.5mm 16”/40cm long circular needle

US 4/3.5mm 6” (15cm) double-pointed needles 

(or sizes needed to obtain gauge)

 

Yarn

Heavy fingering or sport weight yarns (gauge: 29 sts and 32 rnds = 4”/10cm).

Istex Plötulopi, 100% Unspun Icelandic Wool (single strand was used); 328yds (300m)/3.5oz (100g)

Colorways:

MC – 1038 Ivory Beige: 115yds (105m), 1.24oz (35g)

CC – 1030 Oatmeal: 76yds (69m), 0.81oz (23g)

Istex Plötulopi, an unspun yarn (wool that has not been twisted or spun), is one of my favorite yarns to use as it is, lightweight, warm, affordable and it comes in many beautiful colors. It is, however, a little more fragile than other yarns.

To prevent breakage, handle the yarn gently, adjust tension and hand-wind the yarn from plates into loose balls prior to knitting. If the yarn breaks, felt the yarn in your hands by overlapping the two ends and rubbing them together with a little bit of water. Avoid wringing or twisting the fabric when washing (soak in lukewarm water and lay flat to dry.)
